Many people these days still have misconception about what feminist is. Many people think that feminist is only exclusive to women. They also think that feminist is against the men. However, the definition of feminist they have put in their brain is not entirely correct. People do not have to be a woman to be a feminist. You can still be a man and be a feminist as long as you're supporting gender equality. Feminist also does not have to be against men. There may be some radical feminists that do so but not all feminists are like that.
The correction for misconception of the definition of feminist is necessary because too many people have rejected and labelled feminists as rebels in society. What society should know is, feminists have a good purpose which is to achieve gender equality between men and women. For too long, women has always been discriminated and can not get the same right as men in terms of job, education, social, politics, economics, and so forth. Feminists aim to fight for the right of women to do the same thing as men including the salary of work, quota in parliamentary, and any other kind of freedom. Feminists are not rebels and society should be able to respect what they're doing to the improvement of our society.
There is no strict parameter in order to be a feminist. To be a feminist, people should only have the awareness to fight for women's right. It doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman. If you care about the issues regarding discrimination toward women that put them in lower position than men, you can be a feminist. The type of feminist you want to be is your choice, though. You can be socialist, reformist or radical feminist. Regardless of what type of feminist you are, the goal is the same which is to have equality and empower women. If you simply think that patriarchal system in society is problematic and is regressive to humanity, you should be a feminist and take a chance to be a part of revolutionary movement.
